I daydream about how to make things better
Jazz
I daydream about how to make things better all the time, whether it's cleaning or whether it's interacting with a passenger. No matter what it is. I feel like you can always grow and learn and improve things in many different ways.
My name is Jazz. I've been with SEPTA for 12 years in the maintenance custodian department. My specific job is maintaining a clean station for the passengers that come through.
We interact with people a lot throughout the day, in the morning and the afternoon. Sometimes it's questions, sometimes it's other things.
I always say, Good Morning. I always try to greet you. I feel like that goes a long way. You don't know what somebody's going through. I think a little interaction is always greater than me walking by someone and not acknowledging them. I like to acknowledge everyone.
One of my most memorable experiences goes back to when the Eagles won the Super Bowl, and an older gentleman came to the parade and ended up having a health issue. And I happened to be there for the guy and not thinking of it down the line. He reached out to Septa and responded positively to my quick action in helping him. So that's always stayed with me.
One of the first things you do, it's almost like going into the station, the cleanliness of a station. We want to ensure that when people are coming through, you want to upkeep it. It could be graffiti, it can be stickers, it could be debris on the floor, it could be feces. Depending on what it is, each day is different. No two days are ever the same. So those are our main focuses on keeping it clean and making it smell better. When people come through, we want them to come back.
Before we come out to our stations, we always have a briefing every morning to give us an idea of what to expect. Sometimes, the unexpected happens, and we always voice our opinions if we have concerns. And then, at that point, that's when we go out to our specific locations to continue the rest of our day.
I really enjoy it. Every day can be a challenge.
I always say I'm not having a good day or a bad day. I'm always having a SEPTA day.
